Taiwan Description
Taiwan Residential Earthquake Insurance Fund (TREIF) is a not-for-profit organization, established officially on January 17, 2002, following the 921 earthquake in 1999. The quake prompted the government to set up an earthquake insurance program and build consensus to strengthen the earthquake insurance mechanism.
Residential earthquake basic insurance is a statutory insurance in Taiwan and TREIF serves as the pivotal organization of the residential earthquake insurance scheme.

The New Zealand Society of Earthquake Engineering (NZSEE) team visited TREIF on June 5, 2024, and both organizations shared experiences regarding emergency response plans for damages caused by big earthquakes and damages survey in disaster areas. Meanwhile, TREIF also invited Dr. Chin-Hsun Yeh, the Division Director from the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering, to share the earthquake disaster simulation model with NZSEE.
As of 31 July 2025, the cumulative liability amount for the residential earthquake insurance system was NT$6,224,353,385,024. There were 3,709,136 policies in force, representing a take-up rate of 39.13% (based on a total of 9,477,984 households in Taiwan).
