Schweizerischer Pool für Erdbebendeckung (SPE)
Description Schweizerischer Pool für Erdbebendeckung
The Swiss Pool for Earthquake Cover (SPE for the German “Schweizerische Pool für Erdbebendeckung”) provides a maximum of two billion Swiss francs per calendar year in the event of an earthquake. Thanks to this system, the cantonal insurance establishments concerned can at least partially cover the damage and thus support affected building owners, in the event of a major earthquake. However, this protection is barely sufficient in case of a severe earthquake. Therefore, the SPE is also committed to compulsory earthquake insurance.

In 2017, work on an intercantonal concordat earthquake insurance ( IKEV ) was advanced. On behalf of the Preparatory Commission of the Council of States and the Conference of Cantonal Governments ( KdK ), the Intergovernmental Conference Military, Civil Defense and Fire Brigade ( RK MZF ) has pushed this project forward. Cantonal governments have received a corresponding proposal. However, this was not a majority. The CCG can not successfully complete this project, consequently. The definitive assessment is now the responsibility of the Council of States. In summary, it must be stated that the introduction of comprehensive compulsory earthquake insurance has thus become a long way off.
